Salisbury & South Wilts

Salisbury & S Wilts Golf Club welcomed 20 of Hursley Golf Society’s finest to a great day of challenging golf on two courses – The 9 hole Bibury course in the morning and the 18 hole Cathedral course in the afternoon.

The morning round, competing for the Spitfire cup, was closely contested by some excellent scoring with first and second place both having 20 stableford points and so was decided on countback with Chris Swales second and John McCabe winning the trophy. Well done both. There was also a nearest the pin ‘in two’ award won by Mark Jones.

A healthy lunch of ham, eggs & chips set everyone up for the afternoon session on a very challenging Cathedral course where the wind and the greens conspired to thwart all but the most consistent players. The first trophy contested was the WSDL Cup for the highest Stableford score of the afternoon round which was won by Dave Cousins with 34 points leading Dean Lardner in second place with 31 points. Well played Dave and Dean and the scores reflected the tough conditions of play without anyone achieving par for the course.

The second trophy was the Worldmark Cup which was awarded to the player scoring the highest stableford points for both the morning and afternoon rounds. This went to Mark Jones with 52 points closely followed by Matt Kockott on 51 points. Well played Mark and Matt.

Finally there was the presidents putter which is presented to the player who took the least putts over the whole day, which went to

Nearest the pin on the 8th was won by Mark Jones which had to be measured just beating yours truly by several inches. The longest drive on the 10th was won by Matt Kockott just beating Mark Jones by a foot or so.

The day was nicely rounded off with a great dinner which, judging by the generous tips collected, went down very well. The service was really excellent and the staff could not have been more accommodating.

My special thanks go to Steve Elliot for organising the event with every fine detail covered from invitation to collating all of the individual scores which helped make Salisbury & South Wilts such a great day out. Thank you very much Steve.

A special tribute was made in memory of Pam Wharton who sadly passed recently, a lovely lady and long standing member of the Hursley Golf Society and she had very kindly donated Pam’s platter, when Captain, to our society which is played for each year at Wellow.
