Constitution

  1. The society shall be called the “Hursley Golf Society”. It may also be referred to as the “Independent Hursley Golf Society”, where the old abbreviation IHGS needs re-interpretation, such as on trophies.
  2. The objectives of the Society are to:-
    1. Foster the interests of its members in golf by arranging a calendar of golf fixtures throughout the year open to all members.
    2. Encourage beginners by arranging tuition and by organising special competitions.
    3. Arrange and participate in organised golfing events with other ex-IBM Golf Societies.
  3. Anyone is eligible to join the Society on payment of an annual subscription to be set by the Committee prior to the commencement of the operating year as defined by Article 11.
    To recognise exceptional and longaeval service, Honorary Life Membership may be offered to any member(s), proposed at an AGM and receiving a majority of votes in favour at the AGM, provided a quorum as in Article 9 below is reached.
  4. The committee shall include a Captain, Vice-Captain, Secretary and Treasurer. The total members of the Committee shall not be more than twelve, five members being a quorum. The Captaincy will be taken each year by the previous year’s Vice-Captain. Additional roles and responsibilities will be identified and allocated as necessary by the Committee.
  5. The Committee will be elected annually at the Annual General Meeting, held at least one month after the last event of the season, and at least one month before the first event of the next season. The date of the AGM will be set by the Committee.
  6. If the number of the Committee falls below five, the Committee may appoint additional members and they shall hold office until the next General Meeting. A member shall be deemed to have left the Committee:-
    1. On ceasing to be a member of the Hursley Golf Society.
    2. On being absent from three consecutive meetings without good reason.
      In the event of an officer retiring for any reason, a replacement may be elected by means of a postal/electronic vote by the members, without requiring an EGM to implement such a change, provided a quorum as required in Article 9 below is reached.
  7. The posting of a suitable notice 14 days in advance shall be considered to be adequate notice to all members of an Annual General Meeting or other General Meetings.
  8. The Committee or six members of the Society may call an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Society on giving 14 days’ notice to the members specifying the subject of the meeting. The discussions at the meeting shall be strictly limited to that subject.
  9. At all General Meetings, the Captain shall take the chair. In his/her absence the chair will be taken by the Vice-Captain. Six members, including at least two Committee Members and two non-committee members shall be a quorum.
  10. Alterations, additions and/or deletions to the Society’s Constitution may only be made at a General Meeting, provided that a minimum of 2 weeks notice of such proposed changes to the Current Constitution to be issued to members at the time of calling the General Meeting.
  11. The Society’s operating year shall commence 1 April.
  12. Members’ tournaments and matches will be subsidised to a level recommended by the Treasurer and approved by the Committee.
  13. The standards of etiquette and rules of golf as determined by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews shall hold good, together with such local rules and by-laws applicable to the course played.
  14. A President may be elected from the Society membership as recognition of service to the Society. A nomination and majority vote of support at an AGM is required, the term of office to be three years.
  15. The Committee have the power to suspend or expel a member for violation of the precepts contained herein, following a Committee Meeting to which the member is invited to attend.
